Work was becoming too hectic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Although he had only been on the police force for two-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who hardly ever refused working overtime. In reality, he was now working ten to fifteen hours of overtime each week and, as a consequence, he felt like he was losing his handle on his personal life. What complicated the situation was the fact that Lonnie started going out drinking with a group of fellow officers after his shift.

Visibly Lonnie was in a health related and emotional rut and experiencing some negative signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie honestly noticed alcohol related issues and alcoholism signs, however, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn't really a complainer, but she typically begged him to stay at home more with the family rather than going through all of his money while drinking with his friends.

In his heart of hearts, it was apparent to Lonnie that his irresponsible drinking was adversely affecting his relationship with his family, health, pocketbook, and his work. So one Tuesday morning Lonnie got energized and came to a decision to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer friend that he greatly respected.

Lonnie mentioned to Richard how careless drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. Richard mentioned to Lonnie that he completely understood because around nine years ago, he too became involved with careless drinking. In point of fact Richard stated to Lonnie that careless drinking can cause so many difficulties in an individual's life that just about everything of significance can be ruined. And finally, Richard recommended that Lonnie schedule an appointment with an alcohol abuse specialist at the work-affiliated alcohol abuse center.

Due to the fact that his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this rehab facility, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his careless drinking. And since the staff at the substance abuse rehabilitation facility was competent, supportive, and non-judgmental, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol rehab that made sense to him and something he could accomplish.

After talking to his therapist about how his drinking was adversely affecting his relationship with his family, health, pocketbook, and his work, Lonnie realized that he was burning the candle at both ends with his excessive work hours and his abusive and careless drinking. Once he comprehended that he was getting himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the help of his therapist, and after three months in rehabilitation, he was finally able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.

The result was that Lonnie saw life another way now that he was in alcohol recovery and took the time to learn more relevant alcoholism facts. To be more specific, due to his alcohol rehab he not only was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, but he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, he had more quality time to spend with his family, and he felt better and more healthy. Ironically, now that he stopped drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only beginning to save some money for a different house but he also felt more energized and alert than anytime since he and his wife were married.
