A Young Gentleman Requires Therapy For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcohol And Drug Addiction

Roughly eight months ago I had lunch with a forty-seven-year-old male named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his constant relationship difficulties.

As declared by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical issues that he in actual fact has no reason to achieve much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish five semesters of graduate school in psychology.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me question if he is an example of an individual who can look in the mirror and perceive his drinking problems and drug abuse and do something meaningful about these difficulties. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit life's bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency treatment that results in lasting recovery.

It may be asked how rehab would help his alcohol and drug dependency. First of all, there are some recently produced doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in treatment he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to concede the fact that there is utterly nothing positive about chemical dependency and abusive and unhealthy drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the path to deteriorating health, legal problems, shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, a premature death, and financial difficulties. Fourth, therapy for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these mental health issues more successfully and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Because Benjamin doesn't have the ambition to succeed at doing much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he desperately needs a little hope for a more productive life. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he requires for his extreme depression and addiction and continue with his treatment program.

Benjamin is simply too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't realize this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from drugs and alcohol through drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the counseling he needs for his intense depression, he can reorient his life and begin living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

Stronger relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to obtain the professional rehab he needs, follow through with his therapy protocol, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
